How to use Keyword Density Checker
Paste your article draft, blog post, or landing page text into the editor.
Enter one or more target keywords separated by commas to check their exact count and density percentage.
Review the Top Tokens word frequency list to spot repetitive words or missing topic terms.
Check keyword density and word frequency in your browser
This free keyword density checker (and word density checker) analyzes pasted text right in your browser. It counts total words, calculates the exact occurrence count and density percentage for your comma-separated target words, and lists the top 15 most frequent tokens in your draft.
How the keyword density formula works
Keyword density expresses how often a specific word appears relative to the total word count:
Keyword Density (%) = (Keyword Count ÷ Total Word Count) × 100
For example, if your blog post is 1,000 words long and the word sourdough appears 12 times, its word density is 1.20%.
How to interpret your word density results
| Diagnostic Signal | What You See in the Checker | Recommended Editorial Action |
|---|---|---|
| 0.00% on core topic words | Your main subject word never appears in the copy | Mention the primary topic naturally in your H1, opening paragraph, and relevant subheadings |
| ~0.5% to 2.0% on primary words | Balanced, natural repetition across the article | Good baseline; verify that headings and examples actually answer the reader's question |
| > 3.0% on a content word | One term dominates the Top Tokens list | Read those sentences aloud and replace mechanical repetitions with pronouns or specific terms |
| Function words at the top | Words like the, and, to, in lead the Top Tokens list | Normal for natural English prose; focus your review on the nouns and verbs below them |
Use word frequency as an editing check, not an SEO score
Search engines no longer rank pages by counting who repeated a keyword the most times. Google's spam policies on keyword stuffing specifically warn against repeating words or phrases so often that the text sounds unnatural.
Instead of trying to force a "perfect" percentage, use this word density checker during final editing to:
- Catch accidental repetition: Spot crutch words or repeated brand/product terms after combining sections from multiple writers or AI drafts.
- Confirm topic clarity: Make sure the core words your audience searches for actually appear in your visible copy.
- Audit competitor passages: Paste a section of text to quickly see which terms and concepts it emphasizes most.
