XML sitemap best practices for 2026
How to structure sitemap indexes, manage large sites, and avoid common pitfalls that slow discovery.
Sitemaps guide crawlers—they do not guarantee indexing
An XML sitemap is a hint: it lists URLs you care about and optional metadata like lastmod. Search engines may still choose not to index every URL.
One index, many parts
For larger sites, split URLs across multiple sitemap files and reference them from a single sitemap index. Keep each part under the size limits your search console documents (typically on the order of tens of thousands of URLs and uncompressed file size caps).
lastmod: be honest
Only emit lastmod when it reflects a real content or template change. Artificial daily bumps train engines to ignore the signal.
Canonical alignment
Every URL in the sitemap should match the canonical you want indexed. Do not list alternate parameter junk or soft 404s.
Submit and monitor
Submit the index in Search Console (or equivalent) and watch coverage reports after migrations.
Generate a starter structure with the XML sitemap generator, then adapt paths and priorities to your stack.
